Clinical Neuropsychology is a specialized field within psychology that examines the relationship between brain function and behavior. It integrates principles from neurology, psychology, and cognitive science to assess, diagnose, and treat individuals with brain-related conditions that affect thinking, emotions, and behavior. At LarLo Behavioral Services, we evaluate how various brain disorders—whether congenital, traumatic, degenerative, or acquired—impact cognitive processes such as attention, memory, language, perception, and problem-solving.
A central focus of the assessments that are administered at our office is understanding brain–behavior relationships, or how specific brain regions contribute to different mental functions. For instance, the frontal lobes support executive functioning and behavior regulation, the temporal lobes are linked to memory and auditory processing, the parietal lobes manage visuospatial abilities, and the occipital lobes handle visual perception.
We assess key cognitive domains such as attention, memory, executive function, language, visuospatial skills, processing speed, motor coordination, and academic abilities. These assessments help identify cognitive strengths and weaknesses and guide treatment or rehabilitation.
We work with individuals who experience cognitive difficulties due to neurological or developmental conditions. Common disorders include traumatic brain injury, stroke, epilepsy, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease. We also assess neurodevelopmental conditions like attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disorders, intellectual disabilities and certain autism spectrum disorder (ASD) referrals. LarLo Behavioral Services is also experienced in the administration of Independent Medical Evaluations (IME).
A Strengths-Based Approach to Treatment and Intervention
Dr. Lopez has given focus to an innovative approach that places an emphasis on individuals’ strengths rather than focusing solely on their deficits. Traditionally, treatment methods employed by clinicians and school curricula tend to prioritize identifying and addressing weaknesses in developmental, academic, and cognitive areas. This deficit-focused perspective often overlooks the importance of recognizing strengths, which is essential for achieving overall success.
Highlighting strengths allows for improved outcomes in areas where individuals naturally excel. Current interventions that concentrate primarily on deficits may not always yield the best possible results. By reimagining treatment strategies to place greater emphasis on cognitive and academic strengths, we can significantly enhance the potential for individual success.
When treatment planning is reconceptualized to include a focus on strengths for those with specific developmental or academic challenges, it broadens the possibilities for positive outcomes. As a result, more individuals are likely to engage actively in learning, which can help reduce academic frustration and discouragement. This strengths-based perspective supports greater participation, motivation, and achievement across various settings.
Preparing for College
A notable difficulty encountered by many students during the transition to higher education is selecting a major that may not align with their cognitive strengths and natural proficiencies. This challenge often arises because students base their decisions on perceived prestige, parental expectations, or limited exposure to different academic disciplines rather than on a deep understanding of their own abilities and interests. For instance, an individual with strong visuospatial reasoning skills—someone who excels at visualizing patterns, manipulating objects in space, and solving complex spatial problems—might choose to pursue a career in law, a field that primarily demands verbal reasoning, critical reading, and persuasive communication.
Although such a student could still succeed in law through dedication and effort, the mismatch between cognitive strengths and occupational demands might make the experience more strenuous and less intrinsically rewarding. Alternatively, fields such as engineering, architecture, or design could provide a more natural fit for their talents, allowing them to thrive academically and professionally. Recognizing and aligning one’s abilities with an appropriate area of study can therefore enhance both satisfaction and long-term success in higher education.
Post-Evaluation Supplementary Services
Dr. Lopez will assist in providing a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the evaluation results, ensuring that the findings are clearly understood and meaningfully connected to the individual’s areas of strength and need. In addition to interpreting the results, one or more follow-up sessions will be offered to introduce and model evidence-based behavioral strategies designed to enhance executive functioning skills. These strategies may focus on improving organization, time management, working memory, emotional regulation, and task initiation, with the goal of promoting greater independence and success in academic and daily functioning.
